Getting the best from your Invisalign aligners

Invisalign care

Invisalign is the most aesthetic and comfortable way to achieve your magic smile, but for the aligners to be as effective as possible you need to establish a routine of wearing them and stick to it!

Each set of custom made Invisalign aligners you are issued with needs to be worn for 22 hours per day for two weeks. Each aligner has a laser-etched number indicating which aligner it is in the series, so you’ll know which new set of aligners to wear after each two-week period. If your new aligner doesn’t fit properly, stay on the current set of aligners and call us for advice.

Caring for your aligners

Looking after your aligners is an important part of your treatment as they need to be in good condition in order to do their job. Here are some top tips for keeping your aligners clean:

  • Remove your aligners when eating or drinking anything but water. Never drink hot drinks like tea or coffee and be wary of colour drinks as these can discolour your aligners.
  • Always clean your teeth after eating or drinking before putting your aligners back on. If you don’t have a toothbrush handy, chew sugarless gum for a few minutes or rinse your mouth out with water.
  • Use your toothbrush and toothpaste to clean your aligners, paying careful attention to brush all over the surface. Once brushed, rinse them under cool water. You can also soak your aligners when not wearing them either in 50% mixes of Listerine, white vinegar with water or denture cleaning tablets. Also use cool solutions.
  • Always have clean hands when touching your aligner.
  • When you are not wearing the aligners, place them safely in the case provided. Never carry them in your pocket or wrap them in a tissue. Keep your case safe and away from heat.

Once you have finished treatment, you will be advised to wear retainers to ensure your teeth stay in their new positon.
